MahJong The Name
The name of the game, sometimes spelled Mah Jong, Mahjong, or Mahjongg, is an anglicized version of a the Shangai dialect word ma-chong. It simply means "sparrow." Some people thinks that getting the winning tile is as hard catching a bird, and others think that the sound of the clicking tiles sounds like the sparrow's song. Still others think that the name may be a mispronunciation of "Ma-Tiao."
Mahjong literally means "The game of hundred intelligences".
